National Parvo Awareness Day: What Every Dog Parent Should Know

4 minute read

Blog: National Parvo Awareness Day: What Every Dog Parent Should Know. Close up of a dog.

There’s an ongoing cultural debate across the U.S. about scooping dog poop—but beyond courtesy and cleanliness, there’s a much more serious reason it matters: your dog’s health.

What many pet parents don’t realize is that something as simple as a sniff or lick of contaminated ground can expose dogs to canine parvovirus (parvo)—one of the most contagious and potentially deadly diseases affecting puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

A vaccinated dog will rarely get parvo, and if so, it will most likely be mild.

What Is Parvo—and Why Is It So Dangerous?

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that attacks a dog’s gastrointestinal system. It spreads primarily through contact with infected feces—but it doesn’t stop there.

Parvo can live on:

  • Grass, sidewalks, and soil
  • Shoes, hands, and clothing
  • Dog bowls, leashes, and surfaces

That means even indirect exposure can put your dog at risk.

Symptoms can include:

  • Severe vomiting and diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dehydration
  • Fever

Prompt treatment is needed, especially in puppies, as it causes rapid dehydration and requires immediate veterinary intervention, as it can be fatal within 48–72 hours.

The Awareness Gap

Despite how serious parvo is, awareness remains surprisingly low:

  • Only 44% of dog owners know what parvo is
  • 20% have never heard of it at all

That’s a major gap—and exactly why National Parvo Awareness Day exists.

Why National Parvo Awareness Day Matters

First recognized in 2023, National Parvo Awareness Day is observed on the fourth Tuesday of April each year—falling on April 28 in 2026.

The goal is simple but critical:
Educate pet parents and help prevent the spread of this devastating disease.

Because when more people understand the risks, more dogs can be protected.

New Hope: Advances in Parvo Treatment

There’s encouraging progress in the fight against parvo. In 2023, the first full USDA  approved Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody treatment became available. Consult with your veterinarian if this solution is appropriate for your pet.

This innovative, single-dose IV treatment:

  • Works by blocking the virus from entering cells
  • May help reduce the severity of symptoms, allowing shorter hospital stays
  • Has already helped save the lives of puppies nationwide

While prevention is always the goal, advancements like this are offering new hope to pet families and veterinarians.

Prevention Starts with Everyday Habits

The best defense against parvo is a combination of vaccination, awareness, and hygiene. Parvo in dogs is a completely preventable disease. Starting around six weeks of age, your dog should be vaccinated and then boostered every three weeks thereafter until around the age of 16 weeks.

As an adult, the parvo vaccine should be administered again at one year and then every three years thereafter. Proper vaccination provides your pup with the best defense at staying healthy.

Here’s how you can help protect your dog and others:

  • Always pick up after your dog
  • Avoid high-risk areas (like dog parks) if your puppy isn’t fully vaccinated
  • Wash your hands after handling other dogs
  • Keep your dog’s environment clean

And remember—parvo isn’t just about what your dog eats. It’s about what they come into contact with. A vaccinated dog can still get parvo, although it is very rare.
